As previously announced, regional competitions will be held virtually this year. Our plan moving forward will consist of an online test for the technical skilled contests. These tests will be comprised of employability skills and technical skilled trade questions, which will be administered by CETE. Leadership contests will go straight to state. We understand this is a new process for everyone and are aware there may be questions; therefore, we will be holding multiple virtual meetings in January to discuss how the process will work and address any concerns you may have.

We recognize this is not an ideal situation, but The Ohio Department of Education and SkillsUSA Ohio are committed to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all its members and teachers while providing equitable opportunities for SkillsUSA Ohio members. We also echo the advice of Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Health in asking all Ohioans to engage in and promote the practice of everyday preventive actions.

We continue to ask for your patience while we develop the plans moving forward with this year’s regional competitions. As more information becomes available, we will provide updates through the SkillsUSA Ohio website and newsletter.

Thank you for your continued efforts on behalf of Ohio students.

Assistant Director

Office of Career-Technical Education, SkillsUSA Ohio Board of Directors President

October 6, 2020

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to persist in the U.S. and Ohio, raising numerous issues and questions to the reset and restart of Ohio education. In early August, the Ohio Department of Education Office of Career-Technical Education conducted a local school policies survey of Ohio high school principals regarding student participation in career-technical student organization events and competitions, including SkillsUSA. The survey data clearly shows that a majority of respondents have policies that limit or eliminate participation in events and competitions. Multiple meetings were held with host sites for regional competitions to gather additional feedback. After careful consideration of this information, all in-person regional competitions of SkillsUSA Ohio will be moved to a virtual delivery format.

We recognize this is not an ideal situation, but The Ohio Department of Education and SkillsUSA Ohio are committed to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all its members and teachers while providing equitable opportunities for SkillsUSA Ohio members. We also echo the advice of Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health in asking all Ohioans to engage in and promote the practice of everyday preventive actions.

Currently, we ask for your patience while we develop the plans moving forward with this year’s regional competitions. As more information becomes available, we will provide updates through the SkillsUSA Ohio Newsletter.

Thank you for your continued efforts on behalf of Ohio students.

Registration

Registration is now open. There are no major changes to the registration system for regional competitions. When registering students, you must include both the advisor’s and student’s email. This is to ensure that you receive the necessary login information for the student to take the test.

To broaden the student’s access to regional competitions, districts are not limited to how many competitors they may register for individual competitions. This only applies to this year’s regional competitions. With this open access to competitions, there will be no substitutions for this year’s regional competitions.

Registration cost for a school’s first three students per competition is $35.00. Any additional student registered will be $15.00. For example, a school registers 5 students to compete in the information technologies competition. The total cost of registration for the school is $135.00, $105.00 for the first three students and $30.00 for the remaining two.

Date and time of competition testing: February 10, 2021; All tests will be offered during the same time window.

Proctoring

All tests will be administered on the same day at the same time by CETE, the WebXam Vendor. All tests must be proctored in school with teacher or advisor present. Students will have 75 minutes to complete the test and will know their individual scores when completed. CETE will be available for any technical assistance before and the day of competition testing.

Login information will be emailed to the student and advisor the week before and the day before competition day. It is important that you use the correct email when registering each competitor. On the day of the test, students must login by the start time (TBD) to complete the test. Once completed, the student will be able to view their individual score.

Tiebreakers

Tiebreakers for regional tests are as follows:

1.      Pre-Selected questions

2.      Total time taken to complete the test

Grievances

Due to the nature of competitions this year, there will be no grievances for any regional competitions.

Award Ceremony

Each region will have a one-hour virtual award ceremony conducted by the regional officers. These ceremonies will be held the following week of competition date. Medals will be mailed to the school with a spreadsheet of the winners and their contests.
